HeRise Director Aziel Johnson Discusses the Reopening of the Halfway House in DC

In a recent interview with ABC News Scott Taylor, HeRise Director Aziel Johnson shed light on an important development for returning citizens in Washington, D.C. After a six-year closure, the halfway house is set to reopen, offering much-needed support and resources for individuals reintegrating into society.

The Need for a Halfway House in D.C.

For many returning citizens, the absence of a halfway house in D.C. has posed significant challenges. With the previous facility closed and many traumatized by how the facility was taken care of and the residents lack of needs being met, and now individuals are often forced to seek refuge in the halfway house located in Baltimore. This situation created a host of issues, primarily related to transportation. The lack of accessible transit options meant that many clients faced difficulties in reaching their new locations, leading to delays and potential setbacks in their reintegration process.

Transportation Challenges

Transportation is a critical concern for returning citizens. The distance to Baltimore not only complicates daily commutes but also affects the ability to maintain family connections easy access to their probation/pre trial services, and more. Many individuals found themselves further away from their families than when they were housed in the D.C. Department of Corrections (DOC). This separation can exacerbate feelings of isolation and hinder the reintegration process, making it even more challenging for individuals to rebuild their lives.

Community Impact

The reopening of the halfway house in D.C. is a significant step towards addressing these issues. It promises to provide a more accessible and supportive environment for returning citizens. Aziel Johnson emphasized the importance of community support in this initiative. By bringing the halfway house back to D.C., HeRise aims to foster a sense of belonging and connection for individuals who have faced significant obstacles in their journey toward reintegration.

Looking Ahead

As the halfway house prepares to reopen its doors, the HeRise team is focused on ensuring that the facility meets the needs of the community. With a commitment to exclusivity and support, the organization is dedicated to providing resources that empower returning citizens to thrive. In conclusion, the reopening of the halfway house in D.C. marks a pivotal moment for the community. With transportation challenges addressed and a focus on family connections, community involvement, safety first measures and luxury style living, this initiative has the potential to significantly improve the lives of many returning citizens. Aziel Johnson and the HeRise team are leading the charge in creating a more inclusive environment for all.
